Stars get glammed up for Asian Media Awards in glittering ceremony in Trafford

The great and the good of Asian media in the UK were recognised in the stunning event

There were some very popular familiar faces from British TV all dressed up at the Asian Media Awards in Manchester on Friday (October 29).

The ninth year of the event was held at the Emirates Old Trafford and offered a chance for some of the UK’s leading broadcasters and journalists to be honoured in a glitzy ceremony.

Adil Ray was named Media Personality of the year in the first live event of its kind in two years after the coronavirus pandemic affected last year’s ceremony.

On the night, honours were hosted by Sky Sports news presenter Bela Shah and handed out by volunteers and local community groups.

EastEnders star Jaz Deol won the Best TV Character Award for Kheerat Panesar, while ITV News Global Security Editor Rohit Kachroo was named Journalist of the Year

Citizen Khan’s Adil Ray’s passionate speech inspired guests in the year that he stepped up as host and presenter on Good Morning Britain.

He said: “What I realised and it took me a while was that what Great Morning Britain (GMB) does for me and Lingo does is that it gives me a platform and that’s incredibly important. I remember what one of my favourite actors, Jack Lemon said. He talks of a very simple thing – you send the elevator back down.

“It was something that stuck with me. That’s what you have to do in this business and that is all that really matters.”

Adil went on to speak of how important it also was to use his position to help influence people to take the Covid Vaccine – a campaign he was heavily involved with during the lockdown, calling it the ‘greatest thing’ he did.

Volunteers and community groups who had worked with AMA co-founder Umbreen Ali, who passed away last December following treatment for cancer, were invited to present awards on the night.

The awards are backed by the University of Salford who are Premier Partners, and this year they supported the work of Manchester based women’s organisation Saheli.
