If the National Football League is smart, it will soon implement drone video into its broadcasts like the United Football League. The unprecedented on-field access brings a really cool perspective to the fans watching on T.V. at home.
Saturday’s game between the Birmingham Stallions and St. Louis Battlehawks is the perfect example!
Former Nebraska quarterback Adrian Martinez connected with Kevin Austin Jr. on a 10-yard dig route late in the fourth quarter while down by three. The former Notre Dame wide receiver caught the ball at the 35-yard-line and turned on the jets. He made two Battlehawks defenders collide into each other by cutting back to the inside, accelerated through a pair of would-be tackled in the secondary, and scampered into the end zone for six.
From the real-time sky cam view, it was an impressive play. Austin has some wheels!
Only one person thing could keep up— a drone.
The XFL implemented drone video as part of its broadcasts in the past and t was such a cool feature that the UFL kept the innovative camera angle through the merge with the USFL. Smart move!
You could see the drone flying alongside Austin as he scored:

Video from the drone could not have been any cooler. It started way back behind the line of scrimmage, followed the play into the red zone and got extremely close to Austin’s head as he ran across the goal line. He looked startled by the flying object in his face, but it resulted in the coolest shot of the year!

Whether spring football works has yet to be seen. At the very least, it’s a great opportunity to experiment.
The UFL does things differently. The NFL should take notes!
How cool would it be to see Joe Burrow go deep to Ja’Marr Chase from the drone perspective?
