For the second time in as many years, a shark fishing record was broken at the annual Alabama Deep Sea Fishing Rodeo off Dauphin Island after anglers brought a new state record bull shark to the scales.

Last year, anglers landed a state record 1,019-pound Tiger Shark that made national headlines. This time around, angler Tommy Bowyer reeled in a state record 494.50-pound bull shark which beat the previous state record of 448 pounds set back in 2015.

The crew who caught this record-setting bull shark shared a video and photos from the Alabama Deep Sea Fishing Rodeo:

Look at the teeth on this bull shark!

Here’s a look at another big bull shark (and a swordfish) caught in this year’s fishing rodeo:

Captain Adam Lyons spoke with Fox News Digital about the record-setting catch. He said “When you are tackling an animal this large, it is critical to leverage heavy tackle and perform excellent boat work. With a line in the water with that much tension there are risks involved, you want to avoid anything that could damage the line, such as the boat itself. Essentially, we want to tire the shark out to the point we can safely get a tail rope in place. Once we can tail the shark, it is game over for the shark.”

Apparently, getting the shark into the actual boat was a breeze because they had a winch on board to lift it in. And for this catch they were awarded $6,000.

Bull sharks have a pretty nasty reputation. The Florida Museum tracks all shark attacks (unprovoked and provoked), and keeps a chart of the species. Their data goes all the way back to 1580.

Bull Sharks have accounted for the third most shark attacks of any species, trailing only tiger sharks and great whites with a total of 119 attacks, 26 of which were fatal and unprovoked. Which, when you consider the billions of people worldwide who go swimming every year is a very, VERY small number of attacks.

For context, the IGFA fishing world record for the bull shark species is a 697 pound, 12 ounce shark caught by angler Ronald de Jager in Malindi, Kenya back in 2001.
