WNBA Vets Are Starting To Look Out For Caitlin Clark After Blowback From Fans And Media

Caitlin Clark Indiana Fever Las Vegas Aces Jackie Young

Make no bones about it, Caitlin Clark is the WNBA‘s golden goose, and it appears that the league’s veteran players are starting to take notice.

Las Vegas Aces star Jackie Young showed just that recently when she went out of her way to delay a game in order to allow Clark to recover following a slip.

Clark’s Indiana Fever team squared off with the defending champion Aces on Tuesday night. At one point, the rookie superstar fell on the floor, sliding across the court. Young, the top pick in the 2019 WNBA Draft, a six-year vet, and a three-time all-star quickly untied her shoes, causing a delay. Young then stood next to Clark, tying one shoe slowly before tying the other in order to give her time to recover.

WNBA Vet Jackie Young Explains Why She Helped Out Caitlin Clark

Why did she do it? Young explained:

“Yeah, I think…just doing the right thing — just making sure she’s good…and just checking on her. I gave her a little tap…make sure she’s cool,” Young said of the moment. “Because at the end of the day, you know we just want to play this game, have fun, be healthy…just giving her a little bit of time…to reset, regroup and just make sure she’s okay.”

It marks a stark contrast to the treatment Clark has received from WNBA vets earlier in the year.

WNBA legend and Basketball Hall of Famer Nancy Lieberman called out Clark’s teammates earlier in the year for not defending her.

“Well, if I were Caitlin Clark, I would’ve punched her in the face, but I’m from New York and I would have told her to f— off,” Lieberman said, “and that would actually cure the problem.

“I’d be p—— as s— at my teammates that nobody came to my defense,” Lieberman continued. “You know? Gretzky had  an enforcer. Michael Jordan had Oakley.

“I mean that’s, honestly, it’s just bull s—. This has to be better. Indiana has to be better. Somebody has to come to this kid’s, I don’t want to say rescue, but you guys know this better than anybody, Michelle as well.

Since then, Indiana has been better, both at defending Clark and winning games. And it appears the rest of the league has taken notice.
