It’s hard to imagine 2024 will produce any sports stories wilder than the ordeal Scottie Scheffler had to endure when he was arrested at the PGA Championship, and one person has managed to secure a piece of history thanks to an auction featuring the hat he wore after he was sprung from jail.
Scottie Scheffler was on an absolute tear heading into the PGA Championship at Valhalla Golf Club in Louisville in May, as he’d won four of his previous five events (including wins at The Players and The Masters) while finishing in a tie for second in the only tournament where he’d failed to top the field during that run.
He was subsequently the odds-on favorite to secure his second major of the year and was very much in contention after posting a four-under 67 in his opening round.
However, as every golf fan knows by now, things took a wild turn thanks to what unfolded when he was attempting to make his way to the course on Friday morning, as he found himself in a jail cell courtesy of the police officer who asserted the top-ranked golfer on the planet had dragged him with his car while ruining an $80 pair of pants in the process.
Scheffler was quickly bailed out and managed to make his tee time before outdoing himself with a 66, and while he was unable to overcome the 73 he posted on Saturday, he ended up finishing in a tie for 8th before getting to put the saga behind him after all of the charges filed against him were dropped.
I’d argue the aforementioned pants that were “damaged beyond repair” are the most sought-after piece of apparel associated with that fateful day, but the organizers of an auction for the Kids Cancer Alliance were able to get their hands on the next best thing in the form of the autographed Nike hat Scheffler rocked on Friday after being sprung from the clink.
The hat (along with a sleeve of balls that were also signed by Scheffler) ultimately sold for $2,375, which is certainly not a tiny sum but still a pretty solid price to pay to get your hands on a fantastic conversation piece while benefitting a good cause in the process.
