If Stanford University wants more people to attend its college football games, perhaps it should consider cheaper beer. The Cardinal began its season on Friday night and drew a minuscule crowd.

Fans that did show up were forced to spend a small fortune on alcoholic beverages.

David Shaw resigned from his role as head football coach during the offseason after 12 seasons at Stanford. Troy Taylor was hired as his successor after a successful run at Sacramento State.

It is a new era in Palo Alto! There is new blood at the helm and he brings some new life to a program that has not had a winning regular season (2020 doesn’t count) since 2018. The Cardinals also joined the ACC after a long run in the now-defunct Pac-12 Conference.

Even though the program underwent a lot of change over the last six months, Stanford was unable to draw a respectable crowd for its season-opener against TCU. Students do not return to campus until Sept. 17 because the university is on the quarter system, but they would not have made much of a difference in terms of attendance.

Here is how it looked when Stanford took the field:

Here is how it looked throughout the evening:

A stadium that fits 50,000 was no more than half full.

To be fair to the fans, they could save money by watching the game at a bar. Beer prices at Stanford Stadium are outrageous. It breaks down as follows:

  • Modelo, 24oz — $20
  • Fort Point Villager IPA, 19.2oz — $20
  • Trumer Pilsner, 19.2oz — $18
  • Golden State Cider, 16oz — $16
  • Wine, 250ml — $16
  • Bud Light Draft, 16oz — $12

GASP!

The 24-ounce Modelo costing $20 puts the Cardinals at or near the top of the list in terms of most expensive beers in college football. That’s just crazy. Even for California!
