Northern Illinois head coach Thomas Hammock continues to win over the hearts of college football viewers. After beating the Notre Dame Fighting Irish in South Bend, he’s now helping Marcus Freeman avoid another slip up.

Hammock spoke with the Pardon My Take crew this week to detail an awesome deed that could help the Fighting Irish get back into the playoff picture.

NIU shocked the world on Saturday by walking into Notre Dame Stadium and leaving with a 16-14 upset. Entering as 28-point road underdogs, the Huskies completely stifled Freeman’s offense.

The Irish scored just once after their opening drive, and NIU’s field goal with just under a minute remaining proved to be the difference.

Thomas Hammock was emotional after the win, and rightfully so. It was the most notable victory in his alma mater’s history!

Hammock was confident in his team’s ability to compete with the Fighting Irish, regardless of their storied past. He knew this wasn’t the same Notre Dame he grew up watching.

“This is what you can do with the power of belief… I told you all week, we did not need luck!”

That said, it doesn’t mean he wants to see Marcus Freeman fail.

The head coach opened up about advice given to his most recent opponent following the shocking win.

“We’ve talked… Just because we competed doesn’t mean we can’t help each other or try to assist each other to make each other better. Sometimes, when you become a head coach, you don’t have many people you can rely upon because nobody’s going through what you’re going through…

“If I can help him achieve the types of things he wants to achieve, that’s what it’s about.”

The awesome gesture will hopefully help Marcus Freeman and the Irish throughout the remainder of the season as they look to crawl back into the College Football Playoff picture.

Freeman’s three seasons in South Bend have been filled with ups and downs. Notre Dame has beaten the likes of Clemson, USC, and Texas A&M. They’ve also lost as massive favorites to Marshall, Stanford, and now, NIU.

Thomas Hammock wants Freeman to succeed despite knocking him off last weekend, and he’s doing what he can to help. In the process, he continues to become a fan favorite.
