Peyton Manning is one of the greatest quarterbacks of all-time with accolades that few can even dream of. But, his career certainly didn’t start out with him dominating the league.

Manning has the ignominy of holding the NFL record for most interceptions thrown by a quarterback in their rookie season, with 28 thrown in his rookie season back in 1998. It’s a record he’d not like to own anymore.

On Friday, the legend appeared on the Pat McAfee Show to discuss the upcoming season, and joked that he’s ready for one of the rookies this season to break the record.

The Colts went 3-13 in 1998, and part of that was Manning’s 28 interceptions. 1998 NFL Draft first-overall pick definitely showed signs of greatness that year, throwing for 26 touchdowns and over 3700 yards at a time when passing totals were much lower.

As we all know, the rest of his career turned out much better.  Peyton Manning cut his interceptions nearly in half the next season to 15, and would go on to hold all major passing records during his career, setting most of them after he moved to the Broncos late in the career. While he’s since been eclipsed on all of them by Tom Brady and on some of them by Drew Brees, he is still one of the most prolific passers of all-time.

But, he really wants to get rid of that rookie interceptions record.

“You know, rookie quarterbacks, it’s always a little struggle with me. I want to get that interception record that I hold broken. I don’t want (Broncos QB) Bo Nix to break it, but you know, if the quarterback in Washington or Chicago wants to break it, I’m still pulling f0r ’em. I’m a quarterback fan. I got to get that one off my resume. And you think with 17 games Pat, somebody’s gonna break it…Now, my message to coaches, though, look, I’m a big Daniels fan. I like Williams, I like Drake May, McCarthy’s going to be a good player. So is Penix. But, these guys that are starting this year, right? Just  Daniels and Williams. If they struggle early, leave him in there. Don’t take him out, because that’s the only way you’re going to get to 28 interceptions. Plus that’s how you learn, leave him in there. Learn how not to throw that fourth interception but you take him out, I’m just telling you, you don’t learn as much.”

Peyton Manning will back on ESPN’s Manningcast alongside brother Eli, with their first broadcast coming Week 1 when the Jets travel to take on the 49ers.
