Bryce Young is a former Heisman Trophy winner who is currently pretending to be a different Heisman Trophy winner during practice for an NFL organization that drafted him with the first overall pick less than 18 months ago. It is everything wrong with the Carolina Panthers.

Young did not play particularly well during his rookie season in the NFL. He played poorly during the first three games of 2024/25 and completed less than 56% of his passes for an average of only 4.8 yards per completion. His three interceptions are three more than his zero touchdowns.
Head coach Dave Canales benched Young in favor of Andy Dalton after Week 3, which came as a complete blindside. The 23-year-old has not played even one meaningful snap since. The Panthers are 1-2 during that stretch and lost their last two games by a combined score of 73-13. Yikes.
This weekend’s matchup against the Washington Commanders presents another challenge for Carolina. Jayden Daniels was recently named as the NFL’s Rookie of the Week for the fifth time through six games.
To try and prepare his defense for the electrifying dual-threat rookie, Canales turned to Young… as the scout team quarterback.

The Panthers traded a massive haul of draft picks in exchange for the No. 1 overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft. They selected Young with that pick.
Now, just seven games into his second season as a pro, the former first-overall pick is pretending to be the second-overall pick from the most recent NFL Draft. Canales has been thrilled with the effort. He said Young has been very solid in his cosplay of Daniels.

There is a lot to unpack here.
First and foremost, as already mentioned, Young is the scout team quarterback less than two years after he was drafted No. 1 overall. That’s brutal.
To go one step further, Young is doing a “great job” pretending to be a quarterback with a similar skillset who found success right away on a bad team. Perhaps the Panthers should take note of what is working for other teams and their own team in practice and try to use their young quarterback in an offensive scheme that allows him to succeed. Otherwise, they spent all of that capital to acquire a scout team QB.
There is a really opportunity for Carolina to learn a lot about itself from this week of practice and what Bryce Young is doing against its own team. It sure seems like Canales is choosing to ignore it.
