The Clemson football team lost the commitment of its top quarterback prospect on Monday night. After the fact, head coach Dabo Swinney hit the ultimate spin cycle.

Blake Hebert, a four-star passer from Connecticut, had been made a priority by the Tigers throughout the recruiting process.

The quarterback made his pledge to Dabo Swinney in June of last year, but nearly 16 months later, he’s had second thoughts.

I’d like to start by thanking the Clemson coaching staff as well as the program itself for all they have done for me. With that being said, I have chosen to withdraw my commitment and will spend my next 4 years at another institution.

What changed?

It appears some activity at another notable program had an influence on his decision.

Notre Dame secured the commitment of four-star signal caller Deuce Knight last September. Earlier this month, he flipped to Auburn.

The opening forced the Fighting Irish to look elsewhere, and it seems Hebert was their first call.

Hebert tweeted out his decommitment announcement at 5:43 PM on Monday. At 5:49 PM, he had a new school.

Dabo Swinney hit the spin cycle after seeing Blake Hebert bail for Notre Dame.

While he didn’t address Hebert by name, he subtly referenced the decommitment by speaking on his recruiting history at Clemson. He’s taking the rejection as a positive!

“Sometimes the guys we get because of guys we don’t get are the best things that’ve ever happened to us,” Swinney said.

There are some instances where this can be true. It’s happened for the Tigers before in the not-so-distant past.

Swinney’s previously talked about wide receiver Tyler Brown, a player who was a late addition to the 2023 class but led the team in receiving last year as a freshman.

The same can be said for another Clemson star in Travis Etienne. The running back signed in the late period with the Tigers in 2017 after the top option fell through.

He’d go onto become the school and ACC’s all-time leading rusher!

While all of that may be true, in most cases, you’d prefer to hold onto those No. 1 choices more often than not. Now, the Tigers will have to look down their prospect list to fill Blake Hebert’s spot.
