U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) agents recently seized a whopping $3.78 million worth of meth that drug smugglers had tried to conceal in a shipment of crushed marble stone. The seizure occurred Nov. 25 at the World Trade Bridge in Laredo, Texas.

The illegal narcotics were discovered by CBP Office of Field Operations officers at the Laredo Port of Entry when a tractor-trailer hauling what was supposed to be just a shipment of crushed marble stone was referred for secondary inspection. They were alerted to an anomaly in the shipment after utilizing a non-intrusive inspection system and CBP canines.

Upon further physical inspection, Customs and Border Protection agents discovered 66 packages containing nearly 423 pounds of alleged meth with an estimated street value of $3,779,994.

“This significant seizure of methamphetamine by our frontline CBP officers underscores the reality of the drug threat they face on a daily basis and exemplifies their determination and resolve to uphold CBP’s priority border security mission,” said Port Director Albert Flores, Laredo Port of Entry.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers seized both the meth and the tractor-trailer, while Homeland Security Investigations special agents initiated a criminal investigation into the matter.

Meanwhile, over at the San Ysidro Port of Entry in California last week, Customs and Border Protection officers arrested yet another individual attempting to smuggle drugs into the United States in yet another creative way.

There, following a cursory inspection, a 59-year-old man was pulled over for a secondary examination of his 2011 pickup truck by CBP agents. During that secondary inspection, CBP canines alerted officers to take a closer look at the truck’s front passenger seat.

Using non-intrusive imaging technology, the officers discovered an anomaly in the front passenger and rear seats. Upon physical examination, they found non-factory metal compartments concealed within the seats containing 34 packages with a combined weight of 84.57 pounds, filled with fentanyl and cocaine.

“San Ysidro officers continue to exhibit unparalleled vigilance and expertise in successfully detecting narcotics that were meticulously concealed in non-factory metal compartments within the vehicle,” stated Mariza Marin, Port Director of the San Ysidro Port of Entry. “This incident showcases our dedication to protect our nation and communities from dangerous drugs and organizations intending to cause harm.”

The driver of the truck was turned over to the custody of Homeland Security Investigations and the drugs and vehicle were seized by CBP officers.
