On Monday, UFC star Conor McGregor was found liable in the assault lawsuit brought against him by Nikita Ni Lamhain, also known as Nikita Hand. In addition to the guilty verdict, the jury ordered McGregor to pay Hand $328,000 in damages.
After disturbing testimony describing the brutal attack given by Hand in the High Court in Dublin, she told the assembled media, “I hope my story is a reminder that no matter how afraid you might be, speak up, you have a voice, keep up fighting for justice.”
Conor McGregor did not speak to the press as he left the court house, but did later write on X (Twitter) in a since-deleted post, “I will be appealing today’s decision. The judge’s instruction and the modest award given was for assault, not for aggravated or exemplary damages. I am disappointed that the jury did not hear all the evidence that the DPP reviewed. I am with my family now, focused on my future.”
In another since-deleted post, McGregor ranted, “A court of feeling and opinion, brainwashed into people via the mainstream media. Not of fact!”
The former UFC champion would later issue another, more lengthy statement on social media, writing on X, “People want to hear from me, I needed time. I know I made mistakes. Six years ago, I should have never responded to her outreaches. I should have shut the party down. I should never have stepped out on the woman I love the most in the world. That’s all on me.
“As much as I regret it, everything that happened that night was consensual and all the witnesses present swore to that under oath. I have instructed my legal team to appeal the decision.
“I can’t go back and I will move forward,” Conor McGregor continued. “I am beyond grateful to my family, friends and supporters all over the world who have stayed by my side.
“That’s it. No more. Getting back to the gym-the fight game awaits!”
Following the jury’s verdict, McGregor video game publisher ID Interactive removed him him from their popular Hitman series, writing, “We take this matter very seriously and cannot ignore its implications.”
Now, one of Conor McGregor cash cows, Proper No. Twelve Irish Whiskey, announced it too would be cutting ties with “The Notorious One.”
“Since 2021, Proximo Spirits has been the 100 percent owner of Proper No. Twelve Irish Whiskey,” Proximo Spirits stated, according to the Irish Independent. “Going forward, we do not plan to use Mr. McGregor’s name and likeness in the marketing of the brand.”
The Irish Times also reported that in the wake of the verdict, major Irish retailers such as Tesco, SuperValu, Centra, Costcutter, Carry Out, Spar, Mace, Londis and XL said they would no longer stock Proper No. Twelve Irish Whiskey or Forged Irish Stout.
