The FAU football team parted ways with head coach Tom Herman after less than two seasons, firing him midway through the 2024 campaign. They’re reportedly working quickly to find a replacement.

A huge name emerged in the search on Wednesday involving a former NFL star. Ray Lewis has been linked to the opening!

Adam Schefter was the first to report on the supposed interest. “Following the Deion Sanders-to-Colorado model, Hall of Fame linebacker Ray Lewis has emerged as a candidate to become the next head football coach Florida Atlantic University sources tell ESPN,” the insider wrote on X.

Schefter noted Deion Sanders’ hiring with the Buffs, which has paid dividends for Colorado. Not only has it resulted in a whirlwind of national exposure, but the team’s play on the field has taken an immediate step up.

Sanders was able to attract incredible talent to a school fresh off a one-win season upon taking over. After going 4-8 in Year 1, the Buffs are now 8-2 and firmly in the College Football Playoff discussion.

Could Ray Lewis do the same for the FAU football program? ESPN’s sources say it’s a possibility! The first step, obviously, would be making the hire. Unfortunately, contrasting reports claim that the marriage is far from being set in stone.

CBS Sports immediately responded to the speculation by saying that the Owls have not been in contact with Lewis. It’s only offered confusion on the coaching search!

Shortly after an ESPN report said that “Ray Lewis has emerged as a candidate to become the next head coach” for the Owls, sources clarified the matter with CBS Sports and 247Sports.

“There’s been no direct communication between Lewis and the school at this point and it’s highly unlikely that FAU ends up hiring him as head coach.”

-Matt Zenitz

Ray Lewis has no formal coaching experience, according to The Big Lead. Sanders, meanwhile, held gigs at the high school and FCS level before being hired by Colorado. Would the Owls take the leap of faith?

We’ll soon find out if interest is real or if this is strictly speculation. Whoever is hired will have the task of turning around a program that went 6-16 under Tom Herman. That said, FAU has had success with prior big-name candidates like Lane Kiffin. For now, the coaching search continues in Boca Raton.
