Dabo Swinney lost yet another important college football game at home on Saturday. Louisville beat Clemson by 12 in South Carolina and made it so the Tigers cannot lose again if they are to have any hope of making the first-ever 12-team Playoff as ACC champions.
Although the loss was bad, Swinney’s late-game management was even worse.
The 16-year head coach made a baffling decision during the fourth quarter that left everybody watching to scratch their heads, including the ESPN broadcast crew. It did not make sense regardless of how you look at it.
Clemson scored a touchdown to cut the visitor’s lead to 13 points with six minutes left. As is always the case, there were two options from which to choose. Swinney could either go for two or kick the PAT.
If the Tigers went for two, they could’ve cut the lead to 11. That would’ve allowed them to score another touchdown, convert another two-point conversion and then kick a field goal to tie the game. If the Tigers kicked the extra point, they could’ve cut the lead to 12. That would’ve required them to score two touchdowns to tie and/or win the game.
Considering the lack of time on the clock, a touchdown and a field goal was the much easier path to overtime. Scoring two touchdowns is a lengthy venture. Attempting a deep triple does not require the same amount of time and/or yards gained.
Swinney made the wrong decision. He kept his offense on the sideline and kicked the extra point to go down by 12 instead of 11.
ESPN play-by-play announcer Bob Wischusen was baffled by Swinney’s choice!
Play-by-Play guy all over DABO for not going for 2 down 13 points… and he's right. What is Swinney doing ?? #Clemson pic.twitter.com/KoNS7wZ089

In the end, the decision to kick instead of go for two did not matter. Clemson allowed Louisville to score on its next drive, which effectively put the game to bed. The Tigers lost 33-21.
Dabo Swinney got off of the hook for his moronic late-game management because his team was unable to keep the Cardinals close when it mattered most. That may not be much better…
