Miami linebacker Francisco Mauigoa was not penalized for punching a Duke player in the head during Saturday’s college football game in Coral Gables. Even though it was an accident, ACC officials probably should’ve thrown a flag anyway.
Regardless of intent, the bang-bang play was unnecessarily rough.
The whole thing went down during the first half. Blue Devils wide receiver Sahmir Hagans caught the ball on third down and turned up field for a sizable gain. Not long after passing the sticks, he was forced to hurdle one of his own teammates.
As Hagans went up, a pair of Hurricanes defenders closed in to make the tackle. One went at his waist and completely missed. The other, Mauigoa, flew in like Superman to make a big hit.
The 6-foot-3, 230-pound senior extended his right arm to try and punch out the ball right as he collided with Hagans. However, in doing so, his fist made direct contact with the pass-catcher’s helmet.
It was a pretty violent forearm punch right to the noggin!

Mauigoa was not trying to hit Hagans in the head. He very clearly tried to force a fumble. The punch was intended for the football, not an opposing player.
Despite the intent (or lack thereof) behind the punch, it was still a punch to the head…
ACC officials did not determine that Francisco Mauigoa committed a penalty. They either did not see the vicious punch to the head or decided to give him a pass because it was an accident. There was not even so much as a discussion at midfield about the bizarre occurrence, which would absolutely warrant a flag.
Even if it is not on purpose, college football players cannot punch an opponent in the head and get away with it. Well, maybe they can because that is exactly what happened in Coral Gables on Saturday. Duke should’ve benefitted from an unfortunate arm swing miscalculation but the Blue Devils didn’t get the call.
