Shedeur Sanders played his final regular season game on Friday as he led the Colorado football team onto the field against the Oklahoma State Cowboys. The passer was honored ahead of kickoff as part of Senior Day before looking to pull out a win to keep the Buffs’ slim Big 12 Championship hopes alive.
Midway through that finale, he received a prestigious honor thanks to his actions both on and off the field. Sanders was named the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm award winner!
The award goes to the college quarterback that “best exemplifies character, scholastic, and athletic achievement.” He’s the first Colorado signal caller to take home the trophy.

Shedeur Sanders‘ play on the field is undeniable. He ranks fifth in the country in passing yards. He’s tied for second in the nation in touchdowns. That production has helped the Buffs double their win total from 2023.
Off the field, he’s also excelled. The probable Top 5 NFL Draft pick is graduating early. He’ll be able to focus his full attention on his professional career in the spring thanks to that hard work in the classroom.
Some have questioned his character, especially given his actions in a loss to Kansas last weekend. Sanders was seen shoving a referee during a moment of frustration. The Big 12 wouldn’t deem the push suspension worthy.
Sanders’ haters have done their best to criticize him for his actions on the field. In many cases, they mistake confidence for cockiness. By all intents and purposes, he’s been a great leader and teammate. He doesn’t put himself above the team.
His family name, as well as his ability to market himself on a national stage, rub some the wrong way. That said, character isn’t an issue for Shedeur Sanders. This Johnny Unitas Golden Arm award only confirms that fact. It should be one of many postseason honors landed by the signal caller before heading off to the NFL.
