Wagoner High School is at the center of high school football controversy in Oklahoma after multiple incidents of poor behavior further spoiled a blowout loss to Elgin High School on Friday night. The Bulldogs lost to the Owls during the semifinal round of the Class 4A state playoffs.
Neither school has issued a statement about the unfortunate dirty play, which went viral on social media in the 48 hours following the final whistle.
Wagoner and Elgin were both undefeated at 12-0 prior to kickoff. A 23-point defeat at East Central University’s Koi Ishto Stadium ended the Bulldogs’ high school football season two wins short of glory.
WATCH: 12-0 vs 12-0, it's Elgin vs Wagoner two titans of Class 4A FINALLY going head to head! It would be a back-and-forth affair, but the Owls pulled away in this one, earning the 33-10 win!#okpreps@Ritson1834 @tres_lorah3 @AdamEaton_ @ColynDonnelly @ElginOwlsFB pic.twitter.com/eYjGlwqJsn

Unfortunately, the loss was not the lowlight of the evening. One bad egg on Wagoner’s roster let his frustrations get the best of him. He intentionally tripped an Owls player as he celebrated on the sideline and the whole thing was caught on video.
Come on Wagoner , this is what I was talking about losing their cool

The same player got into another physical altercation not long thereafter. A few of his teammates and multiple staffers had to step in to break things up after he grabbed the facemask of an opponent.

The same individual intentionally dove at the knees of an unsuspecting Elgin wide receiver after a deep completion over the middle. His victim was not even involved with the play.

Because Wagoner lost, the dirty player will not face any kind of suspension for the high school football state championship game. However, he should face internal discipline. That kind of behavior is unacceptable. And for it to happen more than one time eliminates any excuse of plausible deniability.
This is the kind of thing that will serve as a learning opportunity for a young player. It doesn’t define his character, but it casts an unfortunate shadow on his final game of the 2024 season.
