As the New Orleans Saints prepare for freezing cold temperatures during Monday’s NFL game against the Green Bay Packers at Lambeau Field, assistant coach Andrew Janocko drew inspiration from a Disney movie. He forced his quarterbacks to practice inside of a literal freezer.
It was a strategy he stole from Cool Runnings— kind of.
The forecast for Wisconsin currently calls for sub-30-degree weather at kickoff after a full day of snow. Meanwhile, the Big Easy is experiencing lows of about 40º. There is a stark contrast between the two and it is hard to prepare for the cold in a warm-weather city.
Janocko, who most recently spent time with Chicago and Minnesota, wants his guys to be ready. He doesn’t want them to be completely shellshocked when they walk out into the frozen tundra.
To get his quarterbacks (relatively) comfortable with the conditions, Janocko brought them into the team cafeteria and walked them back to the freezer. They ran through the entire game script while inside.
This morning, Janocko took us in the cafeteria freezer, where it was like 10 degrees, and we’re just going through the whole script in there, and so just doing that, that helped a lot. So hopefully it’s not 10 degrees, but we’ll be ready.

Janocko got the idea from ‘Cool Runnings.’ The Jamaican bobsled team prepares for the conditions they will face at/in the Olympics by sitting inside of an ice cream truck.
Down in NOLA, they traded the ice cream truck for the industrial walk-in freezer. Same difference, right?
Janocko coached nine years in the NFC North so he has quite a few ideas to prepare for the cold. The change of scenery is good for a few different reasons, even if it gets him some funny looks.
I think there’s something we said about just preparing for [the cold], so you’re not shocked and it’s not something surprising. It’s something that you deal with as far as you prepare for the opponent and prepare for the venue. So I just thought it was good to do something a little different. At this time of the year, it’s fun to do different stuff. It’s a long season and sometimes other than just sitting in a meeting day after day after day, just doing something different, changing up the scene. Guys thought it was hilarious. The cafeteria workers think I’m out of my mind.
— Andrew Janocko
The Saints are going to be underdogs against the Packers regardless of the weather. Maybe the preparation in the freezer will prove to be the difference between an upset win and a demoralizing loss in the cold. We shall see, but if Spencer Rattler plays his best game of the year, the Jamaican bobsled team is to thank.
