It’s been yet another disappointing season for the New York Jets, who will end up missing the playoffs for the 14th year in a row. However, another unenviable streak was at the center of a clue that closed out an episode of Jeopardy! that aired on the same day a new report highlighting the team’s internal dysfunction was published.
At this point, it seems borderline cruel to discuss the many reasons the New York Jets have once again crashed and burned during a season where they’re currently sitting at 4-10 with three weeks to go before the campaign comes to a merciful end.
As is the case with every NFL franchise, the Jets have experienced plenty of ups and downs over the course of their existence, but it’s hard to envy the fans who’ve had to endure plenty of pain since Woody Johnson purchased the team at the start of the millennium.
The Jets were competitive more often than not during the first decade of Johnson’s reign, but they also found themselves playing second fiddle to the Patriots in the AFC East before the wheels really started to come off in conjunction with the ongoing playoff drought that stretches back to 2011.
A significantly longer drought was the subject of the Final Jeopardy clue that capped off the episode that aired on Thursday (the same day The Athletic dropped a fairly damming article concerning Johnson’s mismanagement of the franchise he’s owned for close to 25 years), which read: It’s the only team to play in the Super Bowl before Neil Armstrong’s moon walk that has not been back to the Big Game since.
Judging by their responses, Thursday night’s “Jeopardy!” contestants are not football fans.pic.twitter.com/khKN4Xe67D

Sports categories tend to be pretty hit-or-miss on Jeopardy!, and this one firmly fell under that second umbrella when you consider Neal, Eric, and Laura and all whiffed on the triple stumper by respectively guessing the Browns, Giants, and “Houston” (presumably a reference to the Texans, although the Oilers still called the city home when Armstrong took a stroll on the moon).
The correct answer was, in fact, the Jets, who won Super Bowl III in 1969 but haven’t been able to get past the AFC Championship Game since then.
Way to kick them while they’re down.
