The Minnesota Golden Gophers men’s basketball program is far from a powerhouse. The Gophers have won just three NCAA Tournament games this century and have yet to make the tournament under head coach Ben Johnson, who is in his fourth season with the program.
This year doesn’t look much different, as Minnesota entered Monday night’s game against the Ohio State Buckeyes with a middling 8-6 record. The Buckeyes, meanwhile, enjoyed a lengthy period of success under head coach Thad Matta and are currently rebuilding under first-year head coach an alum Jake Diebler.
However, it appeared that the Golden Gophers were going to get one over against the visiting Buckeyes in their Big Ten conference clash. Minnesota led 72-70 with nine seconds left in overtime and freshman guard Isaac Asuma at the foul line. Asuma made one of his two free throw attempts, keeping Ohio State alive.
The Golden Gophers then fouled to prevent a 3-point shot attempt and the Buckeyes split, cutting the lead to 73-71. Ohio State then committed a foul of its own, sending Mike Mitchell Jr. to the line. Mitchell Jr., however, missed both shots, giving the Buckeyes life.
But that’s when things got really bad for the Golden Gophers.

As Ohio State rushed to get the ball up the court, Minnesota sophomore Kadyn Betts appeared to forget that his team was up two, not three. Betts intentionally fouled John Mobley Jr., who proceeded to hit both free throws and second the game to double overtime, where Ohio State won 89-88.
To his credit, Johnson did not slam his player in the press after the game.
“KB’s was just a little bit of a mental error,” was all he said about the incident.
And to Betts’ credit, Minnesota shot a jaw-dropping 12-of-27 from the free throw line, so it’s not all his fault. But the Golden Gophers are now 0-4 in the Big Ten and the lone remaining winless team in conference play. After watching Monday’s game slip away, it’s not hard to see why.
