The Oregon Ducks’ season came to an end in the College Football Playoff following a blowout loss to Big Ten rival Ohio State. That loss was extremely lucrative for a pair of programs on the West Coast.
Oregon State and Washington State, the lone remaining members of the PAC 12, were paid handsomely after the fact. Due to the Rose Bowl’s contractual ties to the league, the Beavers and Cougars secured massive paychecks.
Jon Wilner of the Mercury News reported on the payout this week. The agreement continues to be profitable for the PAC 2 despite the conference’s demise.
Rose Bowl revenue:
In addition to the CFP payments, the Cougars and Beavers have sole access to the terms of the Rose Bowl’s agreement with the PAC-12, its longtime partner. That deal remains in place for the next two seasons, to coincide with the CFP’s contract cycle.
And it’s a whopper: The PAC-12 receives approximately $50 million annually as part of the agreement with the Granddaddy (of them all).
The math: $50 million for two years is $100 million.
Oregon State and Washington State will split the $100 million payment over the next two years. That’s $50 million a school. The Beavers won twice in this year’s addition watching their traitorous instate rival get blown out, 41-21.
The university will certainly accept that financial payout as it continues to search for answers on the future. The team played a slate consisting largely of Mountain West Conference competition as it scrambled to replace those previously schedule PAC 12 games.
Conference realignment has put both the Beavers and the Cougars at an extreme disadvantage. Both schools have seen attrition due to monetary constraints with its league crumbling.
Over the past two seasons, both programs have lost head coaches. They’ve struggled to keep their rosters intact with vultures luring talent away in the form of lucrative NIL offers.
At least they can take solace in banking the Rose Bowl checks. Both teams won twice in this year’s instance as they counted their millions while watching a former league member fall.
