If Florida Gators head coach Billy Napier is going to save his job, it will be thanks in large part to sophomore quarterback DJ Lagway. Lagway, the former top quarterback recruit in the country according to 247Sports, has all the makings of a superstars. He’s 6-foot-2, 241 pounds with an absolute cannon of an arm and impressive mobility for his size.
He made seven starts as a true freshman and the Gators went 6-1 those games, which more or less saved Napier’s job in the interim. But there may well be trouble brewing in Gainesville according to Mark Long of the Associated Press.
“DJ Lagway will be limited in terms of his participation in spring from a throwing component with the shoulder, and then also the lower body,” Napier said on Thursday. “…I think some lower body, some shoulder. I think our intentions here are to be very smart. I do think he’ll be limited in throwing actives, but he’ll participate in all practices otherwise

Long found those comments interesting, and went on local radio station 1010 XL to expound upon this thoughts on the matter.
“There’s something going on over there,” Long said. “They said he’s going to be limited in throwing activities. He never had a shoulder injury last year. He had a… hamstring. Well, the hamstring was in November. Matt, it’s March. The hamstring was four months ago. Why would the hamstring affect the shoulder? I asked Billy (Napier) specifically, ‘did he have any offseason surgery?’ ‘No.’ I’m not sure I’m buying it, Matt. Something is fishy.”
If Lagway did have offseason surgery, it’s hard to imagine that nobody would know in today’s world. So there’s no reason to believe that Napier is lying in that sense. But it also seems very weird that Lagway still has a lingering shoulder issue from prior to his freshman season.
Did the injury never heal? Did he reaggravate it? Or is it an issue that is going to continue to pop up throughout his career? Either way, it’s not good news for the Gators. Florida needs Lagway getting as many live reps as possible. His physical tools are inarguable. But how does he process the game at full speed? The best way to find out is through lives reps, which is sounds like he’s not going to get.
It’s not yet time for Florida fans to hit the panic button on DJ Lagway. But there is certainly valid cause for concern.
