Although Lane Kiffin is already the most successful college football coach in Ole Miss history, his SEC counterparts do not thinking as highly of him or his team as the folks do in Oxford. They spoon-fed him with bulletin board material during a scathing takedown prior to the upcoming season.
It is amazing how honest people will be under the guise of anonymity!
Kiffin has officially turned the page on his sixth year of coaching college football in Oxford. Spring ball has come and gone. The vast majority of recruiting obligations are on pause. There are still more than eight weeks until the start of fall camp.
Thus, talking season is upon us. It is that time of year where there is nothing to discuss so everybody and their mothers unload their most scorching takes about the upcoming fall.
One of the biggest events of the offseason takes place annually around this time at the end of May. Athlon Sports gets college football coaches to speak candidly about their rivals without asking them to attach their names to what they say. The whole thing is done anonymously.
When it comes to the SEC, three different coaches took some pretty serious jabs at Ole Miss. We don’t know whether the anonymous sources are head coaches, assistants or analysts, but they did not hold back their thoughts about Lane Kiffin.
One coach points to last season’s failures and wonders whether Austin Simmons is ready to go. Fair question.
The first program in the league that went all-in on portal players to take them to a playoff bid went bust. Now what? [Austin] Simmons is talented but unpolished, and it’s going to take some time to develop him.

Another SEC coach took a direct shot at the 50-year-old head coach.
They’re one of the best programs in the country at evaluating the portal, and they’ve done a very good job integrating that talent and winning right away, but this is still an inconsistent program. The loss at Florida last year is an example of why [Lane] Kiffin isn’t considered an elite coach.

The third of three coaches was not quite as brutal. However, he (or she!) also diminished the Rebels in terms of their standing within the Southeastern Conference.
They could be just as talented on defense and maybe bring Simmons along quickly, but they’re still a step removed from the top-end programs. With the level of competition in this league, it’s hard to see a roster like this one immediately come in and secure a playoff bid.

Lane Kiffin and Ole Miss already have a sour taste in their mouths after last year and a chip on their shoulder. The Rebels thrive when people doubt them the most. Even though some of the points made by other coaches in the SEC are entirely fair, they will only fuel this team to succeed. They delivered bulletin board material to Oxford on a silver platter!
