Extreme Heatwave Across United States Creates Legitimate Issues For Europe At 2026 World Cup

World Cup Heatwave United States Hot Temperature European Teams

Extreme temperatures are wreaking havoc on the Club World Cup as a heatwave blankets the entire United States. The weather also creates legitimate concern for European soccer teams that will compete at the international World Cup across North America in 2026.

Will they be able to handle the heat?

This unique predicament first became an issue for Borussia Dortmund on Saturday. The German soccer club chose to hide its full bench in the locker room throughout the entire first half because of the heat. However, the match was played in Cincinnati, where temperatures capped at only 87º Fahrenheit.

If you were to ask somebody who lives below the Mason-Dixon Line what they think about the heat in Ohio, they would laugh. I would be thrilled to see such “cool” temperatures in Nashville!

Music City is under a ‘Heat Advisory’ through the first few days of July. Current forecasts project temperatures in the mid-to-high 90s for the rest of June. That could be a huge problem on Tuesday.

Auckland City FC is scheduled to play CA Boca Juniors at GEODIS Park in Nashville at 2:00 p.m. CT. As of this writing, the “feels like” temperature at kickoff is expected to hover around 103º between the projected heat and the soup-like humidity. Auckland City competes out of New Zealand, where the high during the summer rarely exceeds 75º. They do not know what they are in for!

Dortmund couldn’t handle 87º in Ohio. Auckland is going to struggle with 94º in Tennessee.

On the flip side, Boca competes out of Argentina. Summer in Buenos Aires may not be as bad as, say, New Orleans, but it can still get hot. The Argentinian club will be much better prepared for Nashville heat than its opponent. It will be interesting to see how it effects the outcome!

This ongoing heatwave also creates legitimate cause for concern for European international teams at the World Cup in 2026. They are going to encounter the same issues with weather as the European clubs if they get placed at one of the outdoor venues. That list includes the following host sites:

  • Gillette Stadium — Foxborough, MA — Current temperature: 84º
  • Arrowhead Stadium — Kansas City, MO — Current temperature: 89º
  • Hard Rock Stadium — Miami, FL — Current temperature: 87º
  • Lincoln Financial Field — Philadelphia, PA — Current temperature: 86º

That does not include San Francisco, Seattle, Los Angeles or any of the venues in Mexico or Canada. Those could also be problematic but the heat is not quite as big of a factor as Boston, Kansas City, Miami and Philadelphia.

It could be a real problem if international teams like Belgium, France, Denmark, England, etc. end up at an outdoor World Cup venue during a heatwave in 2026. Qatar was hot, yes, but it is a different kind of heat than that of the United States. We are seeing it play a role at the Club World Cup right now!
