Los Angeles Dodgers Ace Yoshinobu Yamamoto Robbed Of Immaculate Inning By Egregious Umpire Call

In the 122 years of Major League Baseball‘s existence, there have only been 118 immaculate innings ever recorded. An immaculate inning is the peak of pitching perfection: Nine pitches. Nine strikes. Three outs.

Los Angeles Dodgers ace Yoshinobu Yamamoto appeared to have registered the 119th immaculate inning on Thursday night against the San Diego Padres. But home plate umpire Marvin Hudson seemingly had different plans.

Yamamoto began the top of the third inning by sitting down Padres center fielder Bryce Johnson on three pitches. He then did the same to catcher Martin Maldonado. That brought leadoff hitter and superstar right fielder Fernando Tatis Jr. up to the dish. Tatis swung and missed at a 92-mile-per-hour cutter for strike one. He then fouled off an 84-mile-per-hour slider for strike two.

On the third pitch of the at-bat, Yamamoto froze Tatis Jr. with a four-seam fastball right down the heart of the plate at 95 miles per hour for what everyone believed to be strike three. That is, everyone but Hudson, who unbelievably called the pitch a ball.

Dodgers broadcasters Joe Davis and Eric Karros were incredulous.

“Oh no!” Davis yelled. “Marvin Hudson cost him an immaculate inning!”

“I mean, that’s not even close,” Karros said. “That is…ugh, wow … I mean, that wasn’t even borderline or anything. That was borderline middle-middle.”

Davis then asked if the Dodgers could borrow the automated balls and strikes challenge system currently used at the Minor League level.

Yamamoto’s night didn’t get any better, either, as he took the loss after allowing three earned runs in 6.1 innings pitched.

Despite that fact, over 60 percent of players said in a recent poll by The Athletic that they don’t want the ABS system implemented at the Major League level. Only 17 percent of players said they did want it, while the remaining participants said they were unsure.

Something tells us that Yamamoto didn’t want to implement the system before last night, he does now.
