Anyone who signs up to be a lifeguard does so knowing they’re going to have to deal with their fair share of hazardous situations. They’re usually the ones coming to the aid of other people, but that was not the case with the freak accident involving an umbrella that unfolded on the Jersey Shore.
Baywatch may not be the most accurate depiction of the kind of situations the average lifeguard is going to encounter when they’re on duty, but as someone who’s spent decades devoting a good chunk of my summers on beaches on the shores of New England, there’s still plenty of excitement to be had in that particular line of work.
There may be a fair amount of downtime, but lifeguards are constantly keeping their heads on a swivel knowing they might need to jump into action at any moment to rescue someone who overestimated their swimming abilities or (as I once did) got caught in a riptide on a boogie board and ended up a quarter-mile away from the shore.
The water tends to pose the biggest threat, but there are also plenty of mishaps that unfold on the sand—including one that transpired in New Jersey on Wednesday that will probably unlock a new fear for more than a few people.

According to ABC News, a lifeguard who was working the morning shift on Wednesday befell a grisly fate after attempting to grab an umbrella that flew off the stand she was on before being impaled by the pole.
She was discovered on the sand by a fellow lifeguard who called the fire department to assist with the injury resulting from the “stake that had pierced the front of her left shoulder and was sticking out the back of her arm by about 1 foot.”
The unidentified woman, who was “conscious and alert the whole time,” was transported to the hospital for further treatment and is in stable condition.
