A’s starting pitcher Luis Severino sparked gambling speculation during a recent start against the Seattle Mariners. The righty was seen falling off the mound on two of his first three deliveries, both of which missed the strike zone.
The slips might’ve been his way of further voicing his disdain for the team’s home ballpark. Instead, they resulted in an unexpected debate on social media.
The Athletics are moving away from Oakland and into Las Vegas. They’re currently playing in Sacramento while waiting on a new stadium in Sin City to be built.
The temporary home venue is Sutter Health Park, which houses the Triple-A Sacramento River Cats.
The facility has already caused issue for both home and visiting teams. It simply does not offer the luxuries of an MLB ballpark.
Luis Severino hates Sutter Health Park.
The pitcher’s made it clear throughout his first season with the team.
“It’s tough to pitch here,” he said after a loss to the Yankees in May. “You’re just not used to it… You have a routine your whole life, then you come here and just [have to] work around whatever you have here.”
Severino signed a three-year deal worth $67 million this past offseason. He’d previously played for the Mets and Yankees, both of which have relatively new home parks that opened in 2009.
The pitcher’s had to leave those comfy confines for a minor league facility. He’s not happy about it.
Severino’s struggled at home this season. He entered his most recent matchup with an 0-9 record through 12 starts at Sutter Health Park. His ERA was 6.68 with opponents hitting north of .300 against him.
He looked set for another poor showing against Seattle.
Severino slipped not once, but twice in the first inning.

Severino started his opening frame on unstable ground. He fell down on the mound after two of his first three deliveries. Both pitches missed the zone badly.
Some believed he was sending a message to the A’s.
“At this point, he’s doing it on purpose,” one follower said on social media. “He just does not want to be there,” wrote another.
Others, however, thought other factors were at play.
Was Luis Severino betting on himself?
Gambling probes have recently hit the MLB with Guardians closer Emmanuel Clase being placed on non-disciplinary paid leave as part of an ongoing sports betting investigation.
He joined teammate Luis Ortiz, whose erratic tendencies on the first pitch of at-bats were flagged as suspicious.
Bets on Ortiz’s deliveries to miss the zone were recorded in many instances. The activity was seen as unusual. Some quickly compared the situation to Severino’s after seeing his falls.
“Anyone know if Luis Severino is friends with Luis Ortiz and Emmanuel Clase?” one online user posted. “Check his FanDuel account,” commented another.
Severino walked the leadoff hitter on four straight pitches. He’d then strike out three of his next four batters on his way to the best home start of his season.
The A’s won the game, 6-1. Luis Severino struck out six hitters across five innings of one-run ball. He picked up his first win in Sutter Health Park in the process.
Did the pitcher intentionally walk his first batter? Nothing seems out of the realm of possibilities given what’s transpiring around the league. For now, however, we’ll chalk the flopping up to Severino’s hatred of his home ballpark.
