Minnesota Twins TV play-by-play announcer Cory Provus is off this week, so the team has been going with all-analyst, “players only” broadcasts featuring Glen Perkins, Justin Morneau, and Trevor Plouffe. It’s been a fun experiment, especially since the three former MLB players were teammates on the Twins from 2010 to 2013.

On Tuesday, injured Twins starter Pablo Lopez joined the players, making it a four-player booth. Lopez said before the endeavor that he was “petrified” of being in the booth with Perkins, Morneau, and Plouffe. Luckily for Lopez, the three other players working the game have a combined 14 years of broadcasting experience so it went just fine.

Last night, however, the all-players Twins broadcasting crew tried something else new. They put Trevor Plouffe, a former third baseman, on a stool along the third base line to serve as a ball boy. Of course, he was mic’d up for the occasion and able to communicate with Perkins and Morneau in the booth.

“I’m more nervous right now because I am so out of practice,” Plouffe told his former teammates from the field. “When you are in the big leagues, you take ground balls every single day. It’s been a while for me. … This is the thing though, guys. I was born with these hands. They haven’t left me yet, so I can field a ground ball. You guys know, Justin, you specifically know that my throws were the problem.”

At another point during the broadcast, Trevor Plouffe, as every ball boy should, put on a helmet to keep him safe from any rockets that get launched his way.

“As soon as we get done, his rocket ship is right outside left field,” Justin Morneau said, making fun of Plouffe’s oversized helmet. “It’s gonna take him to the moon.”

“Trevor, I can assure you that you booting a ball that comes down to you is not going to be the most embarrassing thing that happens to you tonight. It is you wearing that helmet,” Glen Perkins then added.

“I gotta be honest with you. I was down here and had no helmet on and I didn’t feel that safe,” Plouffe admitted. “Now, with this on, dude, I am locked in and I’m going for everything.”

The ribbing of Plouffe by Perkins and Morneau continued when the broadcasting team pulled up a video of him face-planting over a bullpen mound while they were teammates on the Twins.

“I know what video that is without even seeing it,” Plouffe told his cackling co-workers.
