Conor McGregor wants to be the president of Ireland, but there’s at least one big hurdle in the way. Now, McGregor has launched a petition in hopes that rather than clearing that hurdle, he can circumvent it all together.
McGregor posted a Change.org petition on Monday with the aim of modifying the presidential nomination process to allow himself to be included on the ballot.
Under current Irish law, any prospective candidate must secure nominations from either twenty members of the Oireachtas, the national parliament of Ireland, or four county councils to be eligible for the ballot.
Conor McGregor Is Deeply Unpopular In Ireland
Therein lies the problem for McGregor’s presidential bid. There are not 20 members of parliament o four county councils willing to endorse him. And McGregor has nobody to blame but himself.
In recent years, McGregor has been at the center of several scandals in both Ireland and abroad. He punched a man at a nightclub in Ibiza just three months ago. His pub in Dublin was set on fire by an alleged arsonist in July, and was found guilty of assaulting a woman by Irish courts in November of 2024.
Even if McGregor could get his way onto the ballot – his petition currently has fewer than 10,000 signatures at the time of writing – the odds of him becoming president of Ireland are extremely low.
Not only is McGregor unpopular among Irish politicians, but he’s also unpopular among most Irish citizens. At one point, McGregor was one of the country’s most revered stars.
But his constant troubles with the law and unpopular behavior have flipped the narrative entirely. It would take some sort of miracle for McGregor to find his way into Ireland’s highest public office. And even if that does somehow happen, the odds that he’s able to actually govern seem extremely unlikely.
