The New York Mets are floundering, and superstar free agent acquisition Juan Soto is at the heart of their struggles. But one New York City radio host finds himself in hot water after sharing a disgusting conspiracy theory about Soto’s struggles.
Since starting the season 45-24, the Mets are tied for the second-worst record in baseball. They’ve fallen six games behind the Philadelphia Phillies in the National League East and just a half-game ahead of the Cincinnati Reds for the final NL wild card spot.
Meanwhile, Soto’s advanced numbers show he’s having a strong season, with a 152 OPS+ and 4.6 bWAR. But he’s hitting just .252 and has struggled to come through in several clutch situations.
NYC Radio Host Shares Gross Age Conspiracy Theory About Juan Soto
Soto’s “struggles” led WFAN 660 radio show host Brandon Tierney to hypothesize that he might be slowing down (which isn’t actually true) because he’s older than he says he is.
“If you gave me a chance to put him on the Yankees right now, for the contract he signed with the Mets, or the contract that the Yankees offered, my answer would be … I’m good,” he said. “Pass.”
But it’s why Tierney would pass that’s truly shocking.
“Now I’m not good to the point where I’m feeling good about the Yankees team,” Tierney continued. “And that’s a Cashman thing, but 15 years of this? Honestly, does he look 26 [years old]? … When you’re 26, you still have a youthful glow … I think that there’s a chance, a good chance, he’s not 26. I’ll say it. Whatever.”
Uh, sure. Not only is Soto not slowing down, but what the heck is a “youthful glow?”
Beyond that, let’s dig into the underlying racism and xenophobia of this all. If Soto were an American player, or even from somewhere like Canada or Europe, Tierney doesn’t even THINK to suggest this idea.
But because he’s from the Dominican Republic, somehow it’s okay.
Yes, there have been prior cases of age fraud among Dominican players. But those cases are extremely few and far between. And does Tierney not think the Mets will have done their homework before giving Soto his massive contract?
Unsurprisingly, fans were quick to call out Tierney for his bulljunk.
“This man is casually spitting a racist stereotype. Just because,” one fan wrote.
“WFAN used to help set the agenda in the largest sports market on earth. Now, we get this hot take, with absolutely no proof and nothing to back it up except for Soto not having a ‘youthful glow.’ An embarrassment,” said another.
An embarrassment is a perfect description.
Are the Mets struggling? Yes. Is Soto the reason why? No. Is there any indication he’s older than he says beyond a random radio goof spouting conspiracies? Also no.
The entire thing is disgusting, and in a sane world, Tierney would face some sort of repercussions.
