The Notre Dame Fighting Irish have a quarterback battle on their hands this offseason. The football team has moved on from Riley Leonard and will now turn to his replacement.
As it currently stands, CJ Carr and Kenny Minchey are duking it out for the starting role. Star ball carrier Jeremiyah Love might’ve unveiled his personal preference with a telling College Football 26 lineup change.
Minchey is a former four-star recruit who signed with the program in the 2023 class. The redshirt sophomore has appeared in four games, scoring his first touchdown last September vs. Purdue.
Carr, meanwhile, is entering his redshirt freshman season. He, too, was considered a four-star talent at the high school level before signing with Notre Dame. He logged his first career snap in the win over the Boilermakers last year.
Both have been competing for the starting role since the spring. Neither has been able to pull away from the other. It could be a battle that continues into mid-August.
Who will win the job? One player might have a preference.
Jeremiyah Love piques interest in QB battle.
The running back is the best player on the Fighting Irish offense. He’s coming off a season in which he rushed for 1,125 yards and 17 touchdowns.
That included a 98-yard score in the College Football Playoff opener vs. Indiana.

Love possesses size, speed, and athleticism. He can run through defenders or around them.
He expects to be a focal point in the Notre Dame offense given his past production and the team’s pending change under center.
The ball carrier addressed the QB situation earlier in the offseason, refusing to pick sides in the race for the starting job.
“I haven’t paid attention to the quarterback battle. I care more about my room,” Love said. “I know we got great coaches, and whoever ends up playing quarterback, I know that they’re going to be ready.”

Carr is the default starter, suggesting Love manually adjusts his lineup. Does it mean anything? Probably not.
Love might simply prefer Minchey’s speed over Carr’s higher overall rating. The dual threat quarterback is often the go-to choice in video game play.
In all likelihood, this has no weight on the Notre Dame QB battle. Love is not providing secret intel into the current depth chart, nor is he choosing favorites.
With the race between Minchey and Carr being so close, many are searching for clues as to who will be the Week 1 starter. Love might not have provided any answers, but he certainly stirred the pot!
