We’ve all heard about (or experienced firsthand) the vaunted “freshman 15.” That extra layer many add after arriving to college.

Texas tight end Jordan Washington plans to make his weight gain count following his first year on campus. He’ll use a “freshman 45” to bully much smaller defenders during his sophomore season with the Longhorns.

Washington signed with the program as a four-star prospect and one of the top players at his position in the 2024 high school class. He played sparingly as a rookie, appearing in five games.

He intends to see that number increase in Year 2. He’s put in the offseason work to make it a reality.

Jordan Washington has gained a ton of weight.

He came to Austin around 220 pounds. His recruiting profile listed him at 225. His position coach suggests he was closer to 218.

That size might’ve prevented him from landing a notable first-year role. Blocking 260-pound pass rushers can prove difficult at a 40-pound disadvantage.

He added 25-30 pounds to his frame as a freshman, being listed at 250 on the Texas athletic website. He’s continued the body transformation into his sophomore year.

Jordan Washington is currently listed at 264 pounds, a 46-pound increase from his first day on campus. He’s been hitting the weight room hard.

The Texas coaching staff has taken note.

Tight ends coach Jeff Banks commented on the offseason weight gain during a recent media appearance. He envisions Washington playing a significant role in the offense in 2025.

“He brings that every down tight end [mentality],” Banks said. “Jordan Washington, now, is 260 and some change. He can catch. He’s got great catch radius. I think the physicality with pads on him in the run game is going to be key for him.”

Washington was hurt in spring camp. He’s since worked his way back into the two-deep.

He should see an uptick in playing time following the departure of former starter Gunnar Helm. Many credit the transformation to his transition away from basketball.

Washington was a dual sport high school athlete.

At Langham Creek High in Houston, he was a star both on the gridiron and on the court. That’s not a surprise as he stands 6-foot-4.

His recruiting profile highlights that hoops history.

Basketball athleticism manifests in [contested catch] scenarios. Flashes above-the-rim open-floor finishing ability in hoops.

At Texas, the focus has been solely on football. That includes being able to go through offseason weight training as opposed to spending his winters on the court.

Athleticism has never been the issue for Jordan Washington. His basketball past should only help him when high pointing passes from Arch Manning.

Now that his size has caught up, he should have no problem bullying much smaller defensive backs on the football field. The tight end could be in for a big year in Austin.
