Massachusetts recently sought public submissions for a new flag and motto for the commonwealth. What came in from the public were both unhinged and fantastic.
Sadly, my favorite submission, the Dunkin’ Dino, featuring the Massachusetts’ state dinosaur (Podokesaurus holyokensis) didn’t make it to the final round. But there were well over 1,000 submissions in total.
The Best Public Submissions For New Massachusetts State Flag
As mentioned, there were public submissions for both a new flag and a new state motto. I’ve paid less attention to the motto submissions as the flags, but some of the Massachusetts state motto submissions deserve mentioning.
After Massachusetts Education Secretary Dr. Patrick Tutwiler stated “Our seal, flag, and motto should reflect not just our history, but the vibrant, diverse community we are today — and the future we are building together” these are what came in:
“The Gateway to New Hampshire.” “Witch-free since 1693.” And my personal favorite is “In Cod We Trust.”
Now let’s get to the flags!
Whatever is going on with these four, I love. It is like they gave Microsoft Paint to a bunch of 3rd graders and told them to go wild. These are four of the best flag submissions I came across but my true favorites are down below.
I said before, the Dunkin’ Dino was my favorite and I stand by that. But the blue seal riding a ‘freedom’ surfboard and the unhinged lobster are close behind. Then there’s the MySpace-esque collage with everything Massachusetts stuffed into one photo:

Unfortunately, by the time you read this, it will be too late to have your voice heard.
There is a public hearing today, August 28th, from 2-3 pm of the ‘Massachusetts Seal, Flag, and Motto Advisory Commission Meeting.’ Decisions about these flags will be made. Just hope for the best.
