The Missouri football team handed South Carolina a second straight SEC loss in Week 4. Transfer linebacker Josiah Trotter played a major role in the 29-20 win.
The defender led the Tigers with 11 tackles. He was a force to be reckoned with across the front seven.
The Gamecocks had no answers for the linebacker as they were unable to get anything going on the ground. South Carolina totaled -9 rushing yards. Missouri was in the backfield all game long.
Trotter led the charge to keep the Gamecocks in check. Beamer was asked about his performance after the loss. His first comment hinted at a lost bidding war.
Was Shane Beamer outbid for Josiah Trotter?
“They spent a lot of money on him in the portal, and he was hard to block,” he said in response to a question about Trotter.
Beamer is familiar with the West Virginia transfer. He attempted to land his commitment as a four-star high school prospect.
He ultimately failed in those pursuits as Trotter signed with the Mountaineers. He got a second chance to bring him onboard last offseason.
South Carolina attempted to set up a visit for Trotter. He chose Missouri instead. He made a huge impact in his first game against the Gamecocks.
Was money the reason he spurned Shane Beamer? The head coach’s comments would allude to NIL playing a significant role in his recruitment.
Could South Carolina have offered more?
It seems the Gamecocks were more interested in keeping their current roster intact. They prioritized LaNorris Sellers and Dylan Stewart over transfer portal additions.
No one can blame the coaching staff’s approach as both players are considered top talents in the SEC. Still, it meant ponying up when it came to NIL spending.
Sellers admitted to being illegally recruited with after a sensational freshman year, claiming to have turned down an $8 million offer (across two years) from a tampering suitor.
Stewart, too, was contacted despite not being in the transfer portal.
In the end, South Carolina achieved its goal of keeping Sellers and Stewart on the roster. Did it prevent the school from landing a transfer commitment from Josiah Trotter? We can’t be sure without insights into each of those recruitments.
Still, Shane Beamer made a point to note the bag Missouri threw at the linebacker. The salty response paints the picture that he was outbid.
