A Virginia man came just a few feet from victory during a pig race at the state fair earlier this month. His family rejoiced in celebration as the race neared its conclusion.
And then things took a turn for the absolute worst.
He lost what appeared to be an easy blowout victory in the most gut-wrenching fashion imaginable. I cannot say for certain that there was gambling involved with this horrendous bad beat but his reaction to the loss seems to allude to monetary wagers.
Pig races are serious business at the State Fair of Virginia.
This year’s event ran from Sept. 26 through Oct. 5 in Doswell, VA. I am a few weeks late to this story but I can only go as fast as my algorithm lets me. I don’t live in the Old Dominion so I am not up to date on the results of the pig races, sorry. That doesn’t take away from the moment.
Rosaire’s Royal Races are a big part of the state fair. They take place daily at 11:30am, 1:30pm, 6:30pm and 8:30pm. Based on the amount of sun left in the sky, the race I am about to discuss took place at 6:30.
The concept is simple.
Five pigs are wrapped in a bib and placed at the start line. They are ushered through a very specific course that is shaped somewhere between a U and an oval. The first pig to cross the finish line wins.
A gambling nightmare went from triumph to heartbreak.
Donald had a seemingly insurmountable lead during the 6:30 p.m. pig race on October 2nd, 2025. He was way out in front of his competition as he made the turn onto the final straightaway. The other pigs were still rounding the first turn. They were a few hundred feet behind.
As Donald neared the finish line, a group of spectators near the back of the crowd started to go bonkers. One man in particular, wearing a hat and sunglasses, celebrated the inevitable victory as if he had just won the Super Bowl. He even kissed his significant other because he thought it was over.
The announcer also called the race in favor of Donald. She called it a “landslide” win as he stepped closer and closer to the finish line. Because it was…
… until it wasn’t.
Donald completely stopped in his tracks. “UH OH!”
Panic set in for the Virginia man and his family as he tried to urge Donald to finish. The announcer had to walk back her declaration. The race was back on. Donald did not move as the other pigs crept closer.
And then, out of nowhere came his opponent with a burst of energy at the line to claim the win.
The Virginia man was devastated. It looked as if he had just lost his mortgage.
Donald was just a few steps away from the win until he decided to pull all of the way back. It just goes to show that you should never count your chickens before they hatch. Or, in this case, count your pig before it finishes.
