The LSU football team was embarrassed by SEC rival Texas A&M in Baton Rouge over the weekend. Calls for Brian Kelly’s job rang throughout Tiger Stadium as the game came to a close.

One Aggies assistant had extra motivation in leading his team to a win. He was previously fired by his opponent following a coaching change.

Brian Kelly took over for LSU in 2022. Tommy Moffitt was fired soon thereafter.

Who is Texas A&M football assistant Tommy Moffitt?

He coached in Baton Rouge for two decades, leading the strength and conditioning program. The Tigers won three national championships with Moffitt on staff.

He was able to survive previous staff changes, holding onto his role under Nick Saban, Les Miles, and Ed Orgeron. He was unable to stick with Kelly.

Moffitt was the first staffer fired under the new regime. He has since landed at Texas A&M.

The assistant returned to Baton Rouge on Saturday. His team left with a statement victory.

The Aggies crushed the Tigers.

Texas A&M went into Tiger Stadium and left with a 49-25 win. A late LSU touchdown made that final score appear closer than it actually was.

A second half explosion was to thank for the victory. The Aggies outscored the Tigers 35-7 after halftime.

For LSU, that provided LSU a sense of deja vu. The year prior, Texas A&M used a 31-6 second half run to beat the Tigers. Across two seasons, that’s a 53-point differential.

Head coach Mike Elko took a moment to applaud Tommy Moffitt after the Texas A&M football win.

“Last two years in the second half against LSU we outscored them 60-6,” Elko said. “Says a lot about coach (Tommy) Moffitt.”

Elko credited the strong finishes to conditioning. His guys didn’t tire as the game wore on. They outlasted LSU in dominant fashion.

As for Moffitt, the game was personal. He was said to have put Brian Kelly’s face on tackling dummies in pregame preparations.

Brian Kelly is on the hot seat.

The loss was the Tigers’ third in a season that started with national championship aspirations. Cries for the head coach’s removal were heard amongst the fanbase.

Kelly has accepted that fate. One thing keeping him safe is a $53 million buyout.

He is owed that money should a move be made before December 1st of this year. It ranks as the ninth-highest buyout in college football.

Physicality has been a point of emphasis in the team’s 2025 struggles. LSU has failed to meet expectations.

“Well, I think we need to be more physical,” Kelly said in his evaluation of the team.

“I think there’s always the need for physicality, right? How you play this game really is about who you are. You know, football is a game of violent collisions… The first thing you’re going to look for is physicality.”

Texas A&M was more physical than LSU on Saturday. Strength and conditioning played a role. Mike Elko made sure to point out the Tigers’ decision to move on from Tommy Moffitt. He rubbed salt in the wound!
