2024 Pat McAfee and 2025 Pat McAfee seem to be two entirely different people, at least based on how he views talking about politics on his show. In just over 12 months, the former Indianapolis Colts punter has gone from believing “nobody wants to hear them talk politics” to interviewing President Donald Trump on-air.

“I haven’t polled our crowd but I’m rather certain that nobody’s wanting to come hangout with us to hear us talk about politics,” McAfee said last year.

“I think it’s probably a massive reason for our success actually… so all of this has been a good reminder of what we’re good for, and who we’re good for. Some day, I’ll try and build up enough of a brain to dive into the politics world but that time is nowhere near now.”

Just a little over a year later and Pat McAfee has seemingly done a 180 on that stance, as he had President Trump on his show on Tuesday, November 11, for their Veteran’s Day special, despite Trump infamously draft-dodging by faking a bone spur diagnosis and allegedly, according to former White House Chief of Staff John Kelly, calling fallen soldiers “suckers” and “losers.”

As McAfee and Trump spoke, images of the President flashed across the screen, including one of him at an air base in Qatar.

Despite McAfee trying to rationalize the interview by saying, “He’s the President of the United States, it’s Veterans Day, he’s the Commander-in-Chief — obviously, if we have the opportunity to talk to him, we’re going to… And he is hilarious!”, that wasn’t enough for him to escape the narrative that he’s being a hypocrite and has reneged on his own previous principle.

Trump’s appearance on The Pat McAfee Show and the broadcast of Sunday’s Detroit Lions vs. Washington Commanders game further proves that the “keep politics out of sports” and “shut up and dribble crowd” were never actually bothered by politics seeping into sports, but rather, politics they didn’t agree with.
