Sydney Sweeney and her team are putting on a full court press to spin the narrative surrounding the bomb of her new film Christy, as the actress herself has not only released a statement, but now the actual Christy Martin has, too.
During its debut weekend, the Sydney Sweeney starring biopic Christy made just $1.2 million across over 2,000 theaters, making it one of the bottom ten worst openings for a movie that’s ever opened in that many theaters.
Following Christy’s box office bomb, Sweeney posted a lengthy message on Instagram saying that it’s a movie she’s proud of, and that if it gave “one woman the courage to take her first step toward safety, then we will have succeeded.”

Christy Martin has also released a defensive statement of her own, saying that Sweeney “worked her a–” off on the project.
“I’ve always been a fighter. My life reflected that in every way and now I fight for others. The past few days I have seen some people attack my friend Sydney Sweeney. Syd not only worked her a– off for this film, she worked her a– off for me. For my story. For so many others suffering in silence. So I want to be clear about who Syd is. She is my friend and ally!” Martin said on Instagram.
Sweeney has suffered numerous blows at the box office this year, as her previous two releases, Eden and Americana, also failed to bring audiences to the theater.
In December, Sweeney will be starring alongside Amanda Seyfried in an adaptation of the best-selling thriller novel The Housemaid, which is directed by Bridesmaids filmmaker Paul Feig and hits theaters on Christmas Day. Check out the official trailer for The Housemaid below.
