ESPN presented a freshman at the University of Florida with a check for $19,000 on College Gameday. Blake Cox drained a half-court shot with three second left on the shot clock to win the money.
He already has an idea of how to spend it!
Cox has a four-part plan for how to distribute the funds. It is equally as responsible as not.
College Gameday brought its half-court shot to Florida.
ESPN brought its College Gameday desk to Gainesville prior to the college basketball game between No. 20 Arkansas and No. 7 Florida on Saturday night. The Stephen C. O’Connell Center was rocking at 10:00 a.m. Students started lining up the night before. They flooded through the doors at 8:30.
Blake Cox was among those in attendance.
The Worldwide Leader in Sports debuted its college basketball spin-off program in 2005, which featured a half-court shot for money. One lucky fan — a student — is selected to shoot for a prize of up to $19K. They get 19 seconds to put one in the hoop.
Only four students made the shot in the first 10 years of College Gameday. That number has more than doubled in the second decade. Virginia leads the country with four makes all-time.
There have been just two makes this season and Cox, a Mechanical Engineering major, made the second on Saturday. He completely airballed with his first three attempts. The fourth went in.
It did not matter that the shot clock did not start. Cox drained his fourth shot with three seconds remaining on the official count so the contest was deemed valid. He got him mobbed by fans and the Florida mascot. And then he was presented with a big check from State Farm.
How is Blake Cox going to spend $19,000?
Blake Cox delivered an incredible celebration from the middle of the mob. He looked right at the camera, blew the smoke off of his fingergun and holstered the metaphorical weapon. It was ice cold.
Things eventually calmed down, which allowed Rece Davis to ask Cox about his new wealth. How was he going to spend the money? The answer was four-fold.
First and foremost, Cox promised to “advance the kingdom of God,” which got a hoot and a holler out of Jay Williams. He also plans to invest a portion of the funds.
Of course, Cox is also going to have some fun with the money. The true freshman at the University of Florida is going to “buy some hockey jerseys and attend some sporting events.” Right on.
I would also imagine — despite the legal age limitations — a good chunk of money will be spent on a few libations before tipoff on Saturday. Cox can afford to buy his buddies a few cases of cold ones!
