Oklahoma Softball Gets Preferential Treatment With Horrendous Blown Call To Avoid Major Upset

Oklahoma Softball Controversy Out Abby Dayton Cal Umpire

Oklahoma benefited from a truly horrendous umpiring decision during its college softball game against Cal. A runner has never been more out…

But she was somehow called safe!

Rarely does video review exist for college softball so there was not an opportunity to change the call on the field. It proved to be a massive shift in momentum that helped the Sooners to avoid an upset.

Oklahoma softball is a dynasty.

There may not be a more dominant program in college sports history than Oklahoma softball. The Sooners boast an all-time record of 2,015-794-2 (.717) but that record does not reflect their dominance over the last three decades since the arrival of head coach Patty Gasso.

They reached the Women’s College World Series in 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019, 2021, 2022, 2023, 2024 and 2025. They won a national championship in 2000, 2013, 2016, 2017, 2021, 2022, 2023 and 2024.

Most college softball programs are thrilled to make the Super Regional, period. Oklahoma is legitimately disappointed if it does win a Super Regional at home. It is expects to be one of the eight teams to play for a national championship. It does not see anything less as success.

This year is not the exception.

The Sooners currently rank as the No. 4 team in the country. They are 12-2 on the season with a loss to Arizona in the season-opener and a flukey loss to Long Beach State in the first of two games at the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic on Saturday.

The umpires got it very wrong.

The second game of the day took place immediately after the first. Oklahoma defeated Cal-Berkeley by a final score of 7-5 to get the sour taste out of its mouth from earlier in the afternoon.

However, the Sooners trailed by two runs in the top of the sixth inning. They were the beneficiaries of a mind-boggling umpire gaffe.

Senior Abby Dayton stepped into the box with no outs and runners on first and third. She slapped a bouncing ball down the first baseline. It was a race to the base. The Golden Bears got there first.

Dayton was out— three different times.

Not only did she appear to get tagged out by the first baseman, she ran out way outside of the baseline to try and avoid the tag. That would also result in an out. Neither was called.

If that was not mind-boggling enough, Cal’s first baseman turned back toward first base and completed the throw before Dayton touched the bag. She was out… again… but the umpires called her safe.

Video review does not exist at the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic so the call was upheld after a brief meeting of the officials. Dayton was safe even though she should’ve been out three times.
