The bass fishing world is abuzz with news of ‘The Champions.’ This week, it was announced a new bass fishing tournament was coming to Nashville with the 50 best bass fishermen in the world competing for millions.
The event will be put on by World Bass Enterprises, will act as the de facto bass fishing world championship, and it will feature the largest purse in bass fishing tournament history.
‘The Champions’ Bass Fishing Tournament Coming To Nashville
Typically, huge purses in fishing tournaments are the result of large fields with large buy-ins. That is how the White Marlin Open in Ocean City, Maryland and other similar tournaments work.
Entrants put up thousands to get in and additional thousands across various fishing categories. This swells the pot to millions of dollars with last year’s WMO winner taking home $3.9 million for the top fish.
That’s how offshore/marlin fishing tournaments work, historically. But this is bass fishing we’re talking about and they march to the beat of a different drum.
A Lotta Money!
According to the press release sent out this week, ‘The Champions’ will feature a “record-setting purse of more than $3 million, including a $1.25 million payout to the winning angler – the biggest monetary prize ever awarded to a winner of a bass fishing tournament. Additionally, the second and third place finishers will receive $500,000 and $300,000 payouts, respectively.”
The field will feature the 50 best tournament bass fishermen in the land. With half the field comprised of the top 25 anglers on the The Progressive Bassmaster Elite Series and the other 25 the best from Major League Fishing’s Bass Pro Tour.
When it is all said and done, they are going to crown a ‘World Champion of Bass Fishing’ which is silly because I’ve crowned myself that my entire life. I have a coffee mug that says so. Everyone in my life knows this.
This new World Championship of Bass Fishing, ‘The Champions,’ will take place at Old Hickory Lake at Sanders Ferry Park in Hendersonville, Tennessee over October 28 to November 1st. So R.I.P. to any of the competitors with young kids who are obsessed with Halloween.
There will also be events held at the nearby Gaylord Opryland Resort in Nashville. So maybe the trick-or-treating won’t be too much of a problem for families if the expos incorporate candy into the booths (HINT HINT, EXECS!!!).
In response to news of ‘The Champions’ bass fishing tournament, four-time Major League Fishing Bass Pro Tour Angler of the Year Jacob Wheeler said “there has always been friendly competition and banter between the anglers on each tour, but no way to actually settle the score on the water. The opportunity to crown a true world champion across the entire sport is something our anglers have wanted for a very long time, and we’re thrilled to finally have that chance this October in Nashville. The fact that there is more than $3 million in total prize money is remarkable and a true testament to the elite nature of this competition.”
Pitting the two prominent bass fishing tours against one another is going to be epic. The stories that are going to come out of this event will be legendary.
Good on World Bass Enterprises Founder and CEO Brian Bird for putting this together. The bass fishing world is going to benefit immensely from a championship event like this bringing everyone together.
