In the world of track and field, athletes are typically very cordial with one another after races, showing plenty of respect to their competitors. But that wasn’t the case for Seth Clevenger on Friday at the NCAA Division III Indoor Track and Field Championships.

Clevenger won the championship in the 5,000 meters in a time of 13:35:55, which marked a new meet record. But when he received his trophy on the podium after the event, his fellow competitors immediately left him hanging.

So, what was with all the hostility from his competitors? As it turns out, they may well have been justified.

Seth Clevenger Is Facing Major Doping Allegations

Cleveneger, a New Jersey native, began his college career at the Division I level for Iowa State University, one of the top teams in the country, before he was suspended  team for undisclosed reasons earlier this season.

He then returned to his home state with D3 Rowan, for whom he won a championship.

According to a pair of Clevenger’s former teammates at Iowa State, he was suspended for alleged performance-enhancing drug use.

“Two former teammates of Seth Clevenger from his days at Iowa State told LetsRun.com that during the 2025 cross country season, Clevenger admitted to them that he used a peptide, which is a banned substance under NCAA rules,” a report from LetsRun stated.

However, Clevenger never actually failed a drug test, and because the NCAA is not bound to the World Anti-Doping Code, he remained eligible to compete collegiately.

Since transferring to Rowan, he has absolutely dominated the D3 level, capped by Friday’s championship.

Division III cross country champion Emmanuel Leblond of Johns Hopkins started a petition to have Clevenger investigated, which now has over 600 athletes signed on.

That petition expresses concerns over the “documented doping allegations” and demands Clevenger be barred from competing “without a public resolution.”

Leblond cites video evidence and screenshots of receipts linked to Clevenger’s alleged purchase of banned substances, as well as the track star’s supposed admission to the use of an illegal substance following his final performance at Iowa State.

For now, Clevenger remains free to compete and is an NCAA champion. But it’s clear his counterparts are not at all happy about the situation.
