Despite heading home empty handed, Timothee Chalamet left the Academy Awards as one of the night’s major talking points, as he failed to take home the prize for Best Actor for the second year in a row. Around the time of Marty Supreme‘s release in December, Chalamet was running as the favorite, leading many to believe he personally blew his chance at winning Best Actor. But did he, really? And does it even matter?
Heading into Oscars night, after spending the first half of awards season as the favorite, Timothee Chalamet was firmly an underdog to eventual winner Michael B. Jordan, who entered the night with odds nearly 2-to-1. While Chalamet’s grasp on the Oscars race had been weakening for a few weeks, it all culminated in him having to watch MBJ take home the award instead of him. But why?
Did Timothee Chalamet actually talk his way out of winning Best Actor at the Academy Awards? And does it even matter?
In order to promote Marty Supreme — an original, R-rated drama about a ping-pong player in 1950s new York — Chalamet embodied the spirit of the film within his own personality: brash, confident, arrogant. He was everywhere and he was loud. He was cocky. And it worked, as the film has grossed nearly $180 million, making it A24’s highest-grossing film ever.

That promotional mode carried over into his Oscars campaign, however, and began to rub people — both fans and industry insiders — the wrong way. The flashpoint event seemed to come in late February, just a week before Oscar voting closed, when he took a shot at more classical art forms such as opera and ballet.
“I admire people, and I’ve done it myself, who go on a talk show and say, ‘Hey, we’ve got to keep movie theaters alive, we’ve gotta keep this genre alive,’ and another part of me feels like if people want to see it, like Barbie, like Oppenheimer, they’re going to go see it and go out of their way to be loud and proud about it,” Chalamet said in an interview with Matthew McConaughey.
“I don’t want to be working in ballet or opera where it’s like, ‘Hey! Keep this thing alive, even though no one cares about this anymore.’… All respect to the ballet and opera people out there. I just lost 14 cents in viewership. I’m taking shots for no reason.”
Short of Academy voters going on record, whether or not Chalamet’s attitude actually cost him an Oscars win will remain a mystery. In the moment, however, that certainly seems to be the present narrative.

But while Chalamet losing out on Best Actor for the second consecutive year will obviously sting him personally, it might actually be the best thing for his career. Not only will be able to maintain that competitive chip on his shoulder — and benefit from the ongoing “Will this finally be his year?” narrative that once followed Leonardo DiCaprio’s career — but his entire Marty Supreme run has delivered exactly what he was hoping it would: an entirely new audience.
Everything about Chalamet’s recent choices — from the swaggering of Marty Supreme to featuring in a rap song alongside esDeeKid to dating Kylie Jenner — has been to endear himself to the male, particularly “dude”, audience. He’s had women and cinephiles in the bag for years now, what he needed to make the next step in his career was the support of the 16-40 male demographic.

Five years ago, a ‘frat guy’ being a fan of Chalamet was unthinkable — he was the Call Be My Your Name artsy-fartsy kid with a misleadingly and boujee-sounding French name. He’s becoming exponentially popular with that demographic. Those are the people who are going to buy tickets to his movies and continue to build him into the Leo-like movie star that he so clearly wants to be.
Chalamet may have lost this battle, but he’s winning the war. Just wait until Dune: Part Three comes out later this year and is the highest-grossing film in the trilogy yet.
