MLB Umpire CB Bucknor had a bad day behind the plate in a game between Cincinnati and Boston this weekend. The backstop blue was corrected on six occasions by ABS.
Former pro Cameron Maybin was one of many critical of the performance after the fact. He demanded a suspension, which he says is long overdue.
Bucknor has a history of angering players with his wide strike zone. The league’s newly introduced measures to ensure accuracy forced him to overturn a number of missed calls in his most recent outing.

He was challenged eight times for called balls and strikes during the matchup between the Reds and Red Sox. Two came on back-to-back deliveries from Boston pitcher Ryan Watson.
Slugger Eugenio Suarez appeared to be rung up on two straight called strikes with the bases loaded in the bottom of the sixth inning. He twice challenged those calls to successfully extend his at-bat.
The home crowd erupted after both instances upon hearing the call overturned. Suarez would later ground out to end the inning.
Cincinnati challenged five of CB Bucknor’s calls, going a perfect 5-for-5. Boston challenged three, losing two.

Red Sox manager Alex Cora was ejected in the eighth frame for continuing to argue the strike zone following a check-swing strikeout by Trevor Story.
Cincinnati would win the game 6-5 in extra innings.
Cameron Maybin demands a suspension.
“Long overdue,” he wrote on a social media post that called for repercussions amid the awful outing. The former outfielder has seen enough.
Bucknor has had issues with missed calls in the past. In 2024, he was regarded as one of the worst home plate umpires in Major League Baseball.

The challenge system was introduced at the MLB level in 2026 after seeing success in the minor leagues. It’s forced umpires to be more accurate.
Older umpires have been slower to adapt, which has created controversy. While the human element still remains, umpires are no longer shielded when making mistakes.

The ABS has given players a say when they believe a ball or strike was called wrong. It’s put umpires under the spotlight.
CB Bucknor was unable to avoid the attention after his six overturned calls. We’ll see if he changes his strike zone moving forward, or if the MLB takes action to correct his inaccuracies.
