Will Wade wrapped up Year 1 with the NC State basketball program this March with an NCAA Tournament appearance. Wolfpack fans now fear that he’s on his way out.
The coach has been linked to a former school. Will LSU shell out millions to land its target?
They’ve had no issue doing so in the past. Just this offseason, the Tigers paid Brian Kelly $50 million to stop coaching football. They brought in Lane Kiffin as his replacement for $91 million.
Boosters played a significant role in that movement.
UPDATE: Multiple sources confirm to @wdsu that 1 private donor is expected to pay the lion’s share ofBrian Kelly’s buyout.
Also, @LSU Board Of Supervisors Chairman Scott Ballard says ZERO public money set aside for education, salaries or scholarships will be used.

Will they do the same for Will Wade?
LSU basketball finished 15-17 this past season, which was head coach Matt McMahon’s fourth with the program. Under his leadership, the Tigers went 60-70. They did not make an NCAA Tournament. They never posted a winning record in SEC play.
Most believe he should be fired. There is no evidence to suggest a turnaround.
There are factors outside of on-court success playing a role in decision making. Most pertain to his buyout, which sits at around $8 million if fired this offseason.
Not only would the Tigers be forced to pay McMahon to move on, but they would then have to pay for his replacement.
Just so we’re clear: LSU would have to pay $15.3 million — $10.3 million buyout for McMahon, $5 million to NC State — just to sit down at the table to have talks with Wade.
Just saying. https://t.co/MU2Yr7wfqF

If that replacement is Will Wade, it means paying NC State damages while offering a deal that makes it worthwhile for Wade to leave Raleigh.
The coach was asked about the possibility of a departure during the NCAA Tournament. He sidestepped the question.

“Is the job open there? No?” he asked. “Listen, let me be very clear: I’m excited at NC State.”
It was not necessarily a denial. Wade noted that McMahon is still *currently* employed by the university, but recent message board scuttlebutt has NC State in fear of a basketball reset.
The vibes in Raleigh are changing…
LSU is pursuing NC State’s basketball coach.
According to On3, buzz surrounding Will Wade’s hiring in Baton Rouge has picked up over the last 24 hours.
That report claims that McMahon has told assistants to begin looking for new jobs. It suggests that his end is near. The NC State fanbase is spiraling.
Wade’s buyout to leave the Wolfpack is $5 million. The number dips to $3 million on April 1.
Boosters have proven that money is no issue for the Tigers. They are willing to spend on the coaches they want. There are other elements adding to the speculation.
LSU has made a number of administrative shakeups that could lure Wade back to Baton Rouge, where he coached from 2017-2022.
President Wade Rousse was hired in November. He is reportedly pushing to add Heath Schroyer. Both previously worked at Wade’s last stop, McNeese State University.
Sources: LSU is working to hire McNeese’s Heath Schroyer as a Senior Administrator.
The Tigers’ head coaching job is not open, but LSU President Wade Rousse & Schroyer both previously hired NC State’s Will Wade at McNeese & are on the verge of bringing him back to Baton Rouge.

LSU has the money to fire Matt McMahon. It will soon have an administration that favors Will Wade. Momentum is picking up between the two sides.
Should Wade leave NC State, the Wolfpack will be forced to hire a second basketball coach in as many years. Given the current landscape of the sport, that will mean a complete reset following a brief resurgence.
