Alex Golesh left his post at USF to accept the head coaching job with the Auburn football program. He admitted to being a distraction in his final season with the Bulls, which was potentially costly.
South Florida was in the College Football Playoff hunt late in the 2025 campaign. A surprising loss ended that pursuit.
Auburn’s courtship of the head coach was the cause of the loss of focus. Now with the Tigers, Golesh’s attention has turned to a new SEC school.
Alex Golesh is in Year 1 with Auburn.
The coach spent three seasons in Tampa, leading the Bulls to a 23-15 record. His final campaign was his best.
USF went 9-3, headlined by an upset of Florida in the Swamp. Despite that success, the season felt like a letdown in a number of ways.
The team started the year 6-1 with the lone loss coming to national runner-up Miami.
The Bulls blew a 14-point fourth quarter lead to Memphis in Week 9 but remained in the playoff hunt by rebounding the following game.
At 7-2, South Florida was in the conference championship race. Had they won out, they likely would’ve earned a playoff bid. A surprise loss to Navy derailed the season.
The Bulls instead watched league rival Tulane make the postseason field.
The coach was a distraction.
Alex Golesh’s success made him a popular name in head coaching searches. By November, both Auburn and Arkansas had parted ways with their leaders. Each targeted Golesh as a replacement candidate.
“(November was as) interesting a month as I’ve been a part of. Nothing prepares you for it… All you preach is, ‘Block out the noise. Be present…’
“The entire college football world is trying to keep guys focused, week in, week out and then you’re sitting there and there’s this feeling of guilt.
“You’re thinking, ‘I am the distraction.’ And the only reason I am the distraction is because we’re having success. That part for me was tough because the last thing I wanted to do was cause any distraction.”

Did USF have Golesh’s full attention during the final month of the season? Bulls fans don’t believe so.
“He gave up on the team,” wrote Josh Katz of SoFloBulls. “How dare he say he felt guilty for not giving USF his full attention while he was interviewing for other jobs. That was his own decision.”
Others echoed the sentiment. “It leaves a bad taste in our mouth about him. He blew an opportunity that we may never get again,” said another USF follower.
Golesh’s exit rubbed some the wrong way. It represented a missed opportunity. Do the Bulls make the playoff without the off-field distractions? We’ll never know.
Golesh has now moved on. He has a new distraction with a new program.

The Tigers were heard blaring “Dixieland Delight” over the loudspeaker at spring practice. It will be a common occurrence on the Plains this offseason.
According to safety Eric Winters, it’s part of a new “Iron Bowl” period that puts players’ focus on the final game. Alabama’s presence will be felt at Auburn’s practice throughout the year.

Coaches often talk about taking the season one game at a time. They don’t want to overlook an opponent by jumping ahead on the schedule.
Golesh is breaking from that line of thinking a bit. He wants the Crimson Tide to have his players’ attention. He understands the magnitude of the rivalry.
Auburn will travel to Tuscaloosa on the final week of the season. Alex Golesh hopes this November won’t be as chaotic as his last.
