Viktor Hovland won the Travelers Championship in dramatic fashion after a Monday morning playoff. He sank Scottie Scheffler in the extra session to emerge victorious.
Scheffler was centimeters away from forcing another winner-take-all opportunity. His final birdie putt just missed to effectively eliminate him from contention.
The moment was crushing for Scheffler, who was oh-so-close to capturing a second win on the PGA Tour this season. Cameras caught Hovland’s reaction to the dejecting moment, which is now being applauded on social media.
Viktor Hovland won the Travelers Championship.
He did so in front of a “home” crowd. Norwegian fans in town for the World Cup flooded the course. He used their energy as fuel for victory.

Hovland played out of his mind over the first few days of action. He shot 65 on Thursday, 61 on Friday, and 64 on Saturday to sit atop the leaderboard.
Scheffler kept pace with opening rounds of 64, 60, and 67.
Hovland took a one-shot lead into the final day. He’d get off to an ominous start in Round 4. The 28-year-old bogeyed four times through his first 10 holes to fall behind Scheffler. He then battled back to force the playoff.
Hovland birdied three straight times on 13, 14, and 15 to get back into a tie for first. Both players then hit par on their last three holes to set up the elimination scenario.
The Norwegian hoisted the trophy after Scheffler missed a birdie putt in the opening playoff round. His reaction on the green is being talked about.
Viktor Hovland is a class act.

Viktor Hovland sank birdie in the playoff to set up his Travelers Championship win. Scottie Scheffler missed the tying putt to finish second.
Obviously, the miss was heartbreaking for the World’s No. 1 golfer. He’s now finished runner-up in four of his last eight events. He has not won since his season-opening tournament in January.
Scheffler remains the top player in the sport. Despite the winless streak, he owns nine Top 5s across 14 events. He has yet to miss a cut.
Still, it has to be frustrating to come up just short time and again. Despite the setback, Scheffler was in good spirits after the fact.
“I played solid over the course of four days … overall, I feel like my game’s in a good spot.”

While Scheffler’s loss grabbed headlines, Hovland’s win wasn’t overlooked. Nor was his reaction to victory.
He didn’t break a smile after seeing Scheffler’s putt missed. He refused to take pleasure in his opponent’s misfortune. Instead, he waited for the dust to settle before celebrating.

The win was Hovland’s first of the year. It was quite welcomed after missing the cut at last week’s US Open.
With the victory, Hovland banked a $3.6 million payday. He was a class act from start to finish, both in terms of performance and sportsmanship.
