Johnson was interviewed by Michael Strahan earlier this week to provide an update. He revealed that he was diagnosed in 2025 at age 39.
The disease, which targets the nerve cells responsible for controlling voluntary muscles, has rapidly progressed over the last year. Johnson currently uses a speech generating device to communicate. Initially, his wife believed it was football related. Maybe a pinched nerve.
Testing proved otherwise. His diagnosis was a shock given no previous family medical history. He’s now made it his mission to find a cure.
“You have two choices. You can give up, or you can fight. I chose to fight.”
Johnson has undergone experimental treatment. He is also doing his part to raise awareness.
What is the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge?
The trend went viral in 2014. Participants dump water over their head while challenging others to do the same within a 24-hour timeframe. Many of those challengers subsequently donate to the cause for ALS research.
That initial trend spread to 17 million participants, resulting in donations of $115 million across an eight-week span. In the US, alone, it’s reported that $135 million has been raised as a result of the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge. More should be on the way.
After hearing of Chris Johnson’s diagnosis, fans and celebrities have joined the cause. LenDale White, a former teammate on the Tennessee Titans, posted his clip on Wednesday.

He nominated Deion Sanders and Vince Young, another former NFL teammate.
Johnson’s daughter joined in, too, challenging LeBron James.

Marshawn Lynch followed suit. Here he is getting doused in ice, which was posted to his Instagram page.
Former Utah basketball player Hunter Mecum posted one of the first clips of the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge in support of Chris Johnson soon after learning of the diagnosis. That video was seen by the running back, motivating him to bring the trend back.

Johnson was once the top running back in the sport. He was arguably the fastest, too. Across a 10-year career, he racked up nearly 10,000 rushing yards.
He was named Offensive Player of the Year in 2009 after leading the NFL in rushing. That was one of six straight seasons in which he topped at least 1,000 rushing yards.
“If sharing my story helps even one person get diagnosed sooner, inspires more research, or gives another family hope, then it’s worth it,” Johnson told GMA. To donate to the cause, you can do so HERE. To this point, more than $30,000 has been raised.
