Earlier this month, a Boeing 737-800 plane’s window unexpectedly shattered shortly after takeoff, sucking a Ryanair passenger’s head and shoulders out through the opening. That passenger is now speaking out about the terrifying experience.
The flight had been in the air for about an hour when a loud bang, “like a tire bursting,” occurred. One traveler, who was only identified at the time as a 60-year-old Serbian man, was then almost sucked out of the plane.
Fortunately, he hadn’t taken off his seat belt and other passengers, including the man’s wife, held on to him for dear life. After the plane landed, the passenger was reportedly “in shock” and was “hospitalized with friction burns.”
The man, Ljubisa Karovic, 61, told The Guardian this week that the moments leading up to the “chaos, the catastrophe,” including the explosion just before he was nearly sucked out of the plane, are what bother him the most in the days since the near-death experience.
“It’s the noise before the chaos, the noise that is always there when I close my eyes to sleep,” he said.
“They tell me I fainted twice and again inside the plane and that my face was briefly swollen and deformed because of the pressure, the rush of air,” he added. “My wife reminds me about that.”
Karovic’s lawyer describes him as ‘being alive by mistake’
“Ljubisa dipped in and out of death,” said Karovic’s lawyer Vasilis Tsiaras. “When the cabin lost pressure he was hurled out of the window from his chest up and immediately lost consciousness. He was on that plane heading to Germany to celebrate his brother’s birthday. Instead, at 15,000ft he ended up with his head and right arm outside the aircraft as it moved at a speed of more than 600km/h. Imagine that! He looked at death, that other world, and came back.”
Karovic’s wife, Svetlana, who was seated three rows behind Ljubisa on the plane, also recalled the chaos that occurred when the plane window shattered.
“I rushed over too. None of the cabin crew helped. It was the passengers,” she said. “One man, I think he was an Albanian, was incredible. He did all he could to bring him in and then tried to block the window, first with a bag that was immediately sucked out and then with a suitcase, which worked. We are eternally grateful to him.”
Karovic’s right arm is covered in burns and bruises that extend to his chest and armpit. He will also have to wear a neck brace for at least six weeks and may have to have surgery. In the meantime, he is looking for a little help from Ryanair.
“There are images that come back, the noise of the explosion, the chaos, but I want to recover,” he said. “And, yes, there should be compensation too. Not only emails that have focused on rebooking the flight.”
