Los Angeles Dodgers prospect Alek Thomas was drilled by a giant River Cat mascot that was riding on a scooter dressed as Santa Claus. The bizarre scene unfolded in Sacramento during a baseball game involving the Oklahoma City Comets.
The collision provided an ominous start to a somewhat frustrating night for the minor league baseball player. Luckily, he was able to avoid significant injury.
Thomas spent five seasons with the Arizona Diamondbacks before being DFA’d in 2026. He was acquired by Los Angeles this season and assigned to Triple-A Oklahoma City.
The outfielder took the field for a July matchup against the Sacramento River Cats. Things went off the rails early.
Alek Thomas collided with a mascot on a scooter.
Before first pitch, the former second round MLB Draft pick’s night went awry. As he took the field for pregame warmups, he ran into trouble.
Thomas exited the dugout and wound up in the direct path of Dinger, the Sacramento mascot, who was riding a scooter along foul territory as part of a “Christmas in July” promotion.

It looked painful. Thomas was able to get up under his own power. He’d be available for the game but went 0-4 at the dish.
The outfielder has the potential to receive a call up in 2026. He’s played in the MLB from 2022-2026 for an NL West rival, hitting .230 with 31 home runs. His last game this year came with the Diamondbacks in May.
Thankfully, this incident won’t halt his progression. That wasn’t the case for a fellow Dodgers prospect earlier this year.
Los Angeles can’t catch a break.
Earlier this year, Kendall George was injured during a minor league baseball game while attempting to avoid a collision with a bat-retrieving canine.
He leapt up to get out of the dog’s path and landed awkwardly. It cost him a month of the season.
George was the 36th pick of the ’23 MLB Draft. He is viewed as a Top 15 prospect in the Dodgers’ farm system and is one of the fastest players in baseball.
George returned to the field in June. His professional pursuits have continued after a brief pause. Alek Thomas, luckily, shouldn’t miss time after his freak accident with the mascot.
The Dodgers might seriously consider draping their most-prized players in bubble wrap.
